o v e r v i e w /OVERVIEW
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
FileCFG/95 is a 32-bit Windows95 native application for managing your
ProBoard file area configuration. There are plans to extend it to include
managers for the groups, as well as the message areas, but at this point
the development has been temporarily suspended in waiting for the new
version of ProBoard which is due out soon.
The sophisticated manager allows you to rearrange the file areas in every
conceivable way, edit the individual areas with flexibility that ProCFG
does not offer. All features except the security flags are supported.
Here's a brief overview of all the features of FileCFG/95:
* supports all 10,000 possible file areas
* visual environment, complete with menus, toolbars, animations
* intuitive interface options for further convenience
* search capabilities (area names, any direction)
* advanced selection criteria: level, type, etc.
* boolean expressions in the selection criteria
* global operations (most fields can be modified for groups of areas)
* internal filebase indexing (fixes problems with PBUTIL)
Best of all, this program is completely free! The installation is covered
in the next section.
i n s t a l l a t i o n /INSTALL
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The distribution archive has been compressed with RAR v2.0 (if you do not
have a copy of this superb archiver, visit the WWW site and download it
from there). There are several simple steps that must be followed for the
correct installation of this product:
(1) Unpack the archvie in a temporary directory;
(2) Copy the files FILECFG.EXE and FILECFG.TIP to any directory
of your choice. You may elect to use a directory in your
PATH so you can run the program from anywhere in your DOS box;
(3) Copy the file MFC40.DLL to your Windows95 SYSTEM directory.
If you already have this file, replace it only if the version
you have is older than the one provided in this archive. If
your DLL has a more recent date than 10-15-96, then you need
not replace it;
(4) Make sure you have the PROBOARD environment set as per the
ProBoard manual. If you are currently setting this variable
only in the window that runs the software, you may want to
move the set statement to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that it
is available to all other programs. FileCFG/95 needs this
variable to locate the system directory;
(5) (optional) Add a shortcut on your desktop. I prefer running
the program from the command-line in a DOS box.
NOTE: FileCFG/95 has been designed to look best at 800x600 resolution.
Anything more or less might make some of the display options (like the
toolbar) somewhat unattractive. The program will work just fine, though.
That is all. Now, just type 'FILECFG' at the prompt (or double-click on
the icon, depending on your installation choice) and explore the program!
u s a g e n o t e s /USAGE
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The interface that FileCFG/95 utilizes is fairly sophisticated, but
nevertheless, quite manageable. The initial dialog box has only three
buttons:
Configure and edit the file areas...
This button will activate the main dialog box where you
can perform all desired file area configuration and
modifications.
Create the filebase index
This button will cause FileCFG/95 to reindex the filebase.
The operation is similar to 'PBUTIL FI' which you already
have in your BBS maintenance files. However, this reindexing
will process some entries that are (incorrectly) ignored by
PBUTIL. You may opt to use this option once in a while.
Exit
Terminate the program
Once you are in the file area modification dialog, the following menu
options are available to you:
File
Save - save the current modifications
Reload - reload the data from the file area configuration
Exit - exit to the main menu
Select
Find Text - find areas with text in the name
Select All - select all areas in the list
Unselect All - deselect all areas in the list

Pack All - remove all empty file area definitions

Arrange
Move Area Down - move current area down one position
Move Area Up - move current area up one position
Swap Two Areas - swap the two selected areas
Move Selected - move selected areas to a new position
Sort On Move - move and sort the areas alphabetically
Ascending - in ascending order
Descending - in descending order
Help
Tip Of The Day - display a tip of the day
Today's Stardate - display today's stardate (as used in StarTrek)
About - display some copyright information and stats
There are several buttons which duplicate the commands accessible from the
menus. These are all named accordingly. Also, the toolbar in the top right
corner of the list can be used to delete, insert, clone, and edit file
areas. You can select multiple areas in the list by holding down the
control (Ctrl) key and clicking on the area name with the mouse. You can
also select a range of areas by clicking on the first one and then holding
down the shift (Shift) key and clicking the last area to be selected. All
areas in between will be selected as well.

───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The complete C++ source code for FileCFG/95 is freely available. It is
released in a separate archive in order to conserve space and to avoid
burdening people with things they do not necessarily want. The name of the
source code package is formed as FCFGWnnS.RAR where 'nn' is the revision
number. For example, for version 4.0, the file will be named FCFGW40S.RAR.
The code has been tested with Microsoft Visual C++ 4.0 and the version
of MFC which comes with this compiler. It is highly unlikely that it
can be compiled with tools from another vendor.
The source code is subject to the terms and conditions outlined in the
file LICENSE.DOC distributed with it. It is basically free for any use
but it remains copyrighted by Branislav L. Slantchev.
p a c k i n g s l i p /PACKING
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The files in this archive has been compressed with RAR Version 2.0 with
a security envelope. The reason for this format is quite simple - it
compresses far better than ZIP (not as fast, though). When you unpack the
files, you should see the following message at startup:
Verifying authenticity information ... Ok
and then (when the process is complete, you should see the following):
Archive FCFGW40X.RAR
created at hh:mm:ss dd mmm yyyy
by Silicon Creations, Inc.
If you don't see these messages, the archive has most likely been tampered
with and you should obtain a fresh copy. Note that I have had problems with
people modifying the archives before and that is why I strongly suggest
you take every precaution possible to prevent malicious "hackers" from
wreaking havoc on your computer. For all those "hackers", I can feel
nothing but pity... maybe some day they will learn how to do something on
their own... something creative. Until that time, we must protect ourselves.

───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Of course, no registration is necessary for this program. It is being
distributed as freeware (meaning that I retain the copyright but you
are allowed to use FileCFG/95 without paying me any money). Since
some people have expressed desire to contribute to Silicon Creations,
I hereby officially notify everyone that donations are accepted. You can
also request custom programs for a nominal fee. I reserve the right to
refuse anything sent to me or any request made for programming. Priority
will be given to projects that bring $$$. Ah, if you strongly feel like
contributing but you are not able to afford sending money, it's ok. Send
me a post card of your home town, I would really appreciate it. If you
can't afford that... have a beer on my behalf :-)

Due to the lengthy nature of the topic, it has been moved to a separate
file. Read SUPPORT.DOC for details on how to get in touch with me. Also,
read the file FAQ.Doc for some questions people frequently ask me and
the answers to them (this file may or may not be present in the archive).
